As I mentioned at a previous post, I did a small research on how Cypriot fashion-related people view the development of fashion at the island at the moment. I’ve talked with a few people that I believed I wanted to know their opinion on this issue. You will remember Demosthenis Michael from a post I did about his most recent work a few days ago. Raphaella Themistocleous a photographer that has really starting getting involved in the field, she has already met Cara Delavigne, Lady Gaga, Mary Katrantzou and other famous people. Orestis Koutsokoumnis, interior/product/jewellery designer.
“The field of fashion in our island we can say that it already started to flourish either positively or negatively. What is lacking however particularly in the fashion department in our country is the conceptual fashion design, avant garde. Very few designers work with concept. What is concept? A specific terminology to explain clearly what is right and what is wrong it’s not found yet. To me the word concept is everything in design.
Have to decide what it is that inspired me, to study it enough, and then decide what features will put my creations in, with a few words the identity of the specific collection.
Fashion is character, everyday, and the personality of a person. Currently, the fashion on the island begins and takes one outlandish character, not bad from my opinion; you just have to understand correctly what fashion is and the attitude we must keep. I’m not saying to get to the age of “breeches” and “apron”, we just should not underestimate our traditional outfit. Today, there are many designers in the market but just a few talents either on technical or on creative issues.”

“As a newcomer Cypriot designer, I have to note that Cyprus the last decade has developed very well in the fashion industry. New artists and fresh ideas are presented every year in the best known catwalk of the island. But I cannot say that the level on ideas, on concepts and on variety are high. Many of the designers launch the same ideas and collections again and again with different details every time. In my opinion, this is wrong, when designers must present continuously new and fresh ideas, trends, materials etc.
For me, the general fashion industry means, orama, research, drawings, ideas, nights owl up to a drawing, success but failure too. As a designer when you enter in this world, you have to accept these conditions of the industry and never proceed with your-self conditions. To felt one designer with great success in Cyprus but also in an international level, the designer-soul must be moved in the designs.
Finally, I want to point that I love the intelligence of young designers and all those which are in need of subordinate fashion.”

“When it comes to fashion is not all about clothes, it’s about art your personality, the way you feel, it is constantly being developed and it is constantly changing. From a point on fashion becomes a need, a lifestyle, and it is actually much more than just the clothes, it’s an idea, it’s the way you feel and act, as for that Cyprus couldn’t have been left behind as in the past few years fashion and every means of it has had a tremendous revolution, and it became a part of everyone’s routine. The huge development of fashion in Cyprus really surprises me, as Cypriots – and mostly women, are not blindly following the trends anymore, but instead they have developed their own personal style, overcoming the old boring typical stereotype, and they eventually outstand ‘in the crowd’. Another point – or better FACT, that surprised me is the increase in the Cypriot fashion bloggers and designers that have great success abroad, giving Cyprus a strong presence in every major fashion activity/event, proving once again how things have changed, and how active and enthusiastic Cypriots are when it comes to fashion.”
