As the final rehearsals take place today for the opening of the New York City Ballet Fall Gala, Mary Katrantzou reveals the final costumes. Absolutely love them!
Designed by Mary Katrantzou, the dancers will be taking to the stage tonight for newly appointed resident choreographer, Justin Peck’s piece, Belles Lettres, which literally translates from French to English as “beautiful letters, set to an untitled piano piece by César Franck. The title, according to the choreographer has a dual meaning: One, the basic description of Ms. Katrantzou’s work, and two, a category of literature valued for its elegant aesthetics. Taking notes from her resort 2015 collection, Mary sought to construct a second skin for the dancers, incorporating the love letter lace applique into the garments to look as though they are floating on the body. The final creation consists of nude dresses for the ballerinas, with a light and airy tulle skirt for the women and bodysuits for the men.
