Recently, Eleni Sophocleous presented her new work at the Beat Pazar, in Limassol. We went to the opening, saw the new collection, loved it and we wanted to get to know more.
-Hello Eleni, congratulations on your new work and thank you for giving us some time! First, tell me a little about what did you study?
-I studied in Brighton, “Textiles for fashion with business studies” specializing in woven fabric. Then I went to London, where I did 4 short courses in knitting, professional sewing, jewelry, and the following year I did my Masters at Chelsea College of Art and Design, in Interior and Spatial Design. Then I worked with Mary Katrantzou and 4 other houses, a jewelry house, cinderella b.
As soon as I returned to Cyprus, I opened my own label E | S designs, where I started with custom-made accessories, with unique and innovative materials, where I added the textile piece. Basically, I always wanted to make jewelry with fabrics, so I made various attempts, with various materials, plastic, wood, leather, fabric printed, painted. I always wanted someone to wear something special, thinking that I always wanted to wear jewels that show off my style that I could not easily purchase.
-How did people then accept it?
-The world had “well received” me, of course there were people that preferred the simplest pieces but always with my own touch.
-So do people like different?
-They do yes, there are clients who have kept this style, the most special, but I have others that are contemporary but not so extreme.
-But the new job has apparel as well.
-Yes, the new job consists of 72 pieces, including clothes, accessories, bags and sandals. Woven, knitted, stranded in handbags, leather in sandals, all designs are mine. The collection has main material thread, cotton and linen.
-The loom, where is it used?
-In details on some clothes, belts and some pieces that are entirely woven. I wanted to show along the transparent fabric and the woven fabric. That’s why in the Manifesto I write that the inspiration was the skeleton flower, which grows in the mountainous areas of China, the flower is white but when it gets wet becomes transparent. So all the pieces are both woven and transparent.
-All colors are inspired by nature textures, sunset, flowers, more pastel colors. The color palette consists of 12 colors.
-How can someone order?
-All the pieces will be in the shop in sample sizing, and then will be custom-made for each lady, she can also change colors as well and choose one from the palette or choose a different weave.
-How long does it takes, depending on the piece, to create the garment?
It depends, those that are entirely woven need 2-3 weeks – others that have just some detail of woven, need less.
-I want to add that it’s one of the most consistent works I’ve ever seen, even at setting up the show.
-Thanks! Basically, that’s what I tried to do, and because I always have too many ideas at the beginning I had to limit them. Decide a 10-color palette, and keep it in minimal forms, to be able to be worn by a female from 15 – 70 from morning till night. If a woman wants to wear it with a sandal or if she wants to match it with her pearls and high heels; she could actually integrate my garment into her own style.
-Generally the forms and fabrics are very light.
-Yes they are light and summery, but they can be worn both in spring and autumn. Some textiles that I wanted them to be bolder and more solid are a bit thicker. For winter, perhaps not so relevant because of the colors but of course for someone it can fit in her style all year round.
-Will we continue to see clothing in the next collection?
-Yes, I think that now that I have the loom I will continue to do clothes and accessories for every collection.
